About XMLBeautify
What this is
An XML formatter, minifier, well-formedness checker and XML-to-JSON converter that runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded; there is no network request carrying your document.
Three tools with three different guarantees
| Tool | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Format / Minify (home page) | Splits the text at tag boundaries and re-indents, or removes whitespace between tags. It is textual. | It does not parse. CDATA sections, comments with >< inside them, and text between tags are not understood. |
| Well-formedness checker | Parses the document with an XML 1.0 state machine and reports the first error with line and column. | It does not read a DTD or validate against an XSD. A document can pass and still be invalid for its schema. |
| XML to JSON | Parses first, then maps attributes to @name keys and repeated elements to arrays. | It does not keep the order of text interleaved with child elements. |
When to use something else
xmllint --format and xmllint --noout --schema schema.xsd (libxml2) parse properly and validate against a schema. Use them in CI. This site is for the quick look: pasting a SOAP response from a log and finding out which tag is unclosed.
